The San Benito CISD School Board of Trustees held a special meeting on February 27 to discuss various agenda items. The meeting commenced with a notice that closed-session discussions may occur in accordance with the Texas Open Meetings Act.
Members of the board were present physically at the designated location, while some participated remotely via video conference.
During the public comment period, citizen and district watchdog Linda G. Garcia addressed the board, expressing interest in understanding Senate Bill 763 and its potential implications for the district. She emphasized the importance of counseling services for students and sought clarity on the board’s stance regarding the adoption of the bill.
Following public comments, the board moved on to discuss agenda item 1.3, which pertained to adopting a policy regarding chaplains as per Senate Bill 763. There was deliberation on the definition of chaplains and their role within the school district. Ultimately, a motion was made, seconded, and carried not to approve the policy regarding chaplains.
After the vote, San Benito CISD Acting Superintendent of Schools, Alfredo “Fred” Perez provided clarification, stating that while a policy regarding chaplains would not be created, volunteers would still be welcome in the district, subject to appropriate procedures and background checks.
The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn, which was unanimously approved.
