According to the Cameron County Sherriff’s Office (CCSO), on Sunday, December 31, 2023, Cameron County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call at a residence on the 25000 block of FM 1846, in the San Benito area, regarding a reported unauthorized use of a vehicle.
Upon arrival to the location, Sheriff’s Deputies made contact with a 24-year-old individual who contacted the CCSO. The victim said that he left his vehicle with a mechanic for a tune-up the day prior.
The male subject went on to further say that around 2 a.m., a State Trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety informed him that his vehicle was involved in a motor vehicle accident and identified the operator as Angel DeJesus Gomez Berrones, the mechanic the subject said he left his vehicle with to service.
The DPS Trooper informed the subject that Gomez Berrones was arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated and that the vehicle was subsequently towed.
On January 5, 2024, Cameron County Sheriff’s Investigators made contact with Gomez Berrones while he was incarcerated at the Cameron County Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center in Olmito awaiting arraignment for the DWI charge.
Sheriff Investigators advised Gomez Berrones of his Miranda warnings, according to a CCSO report. Thereafter, Gomez Berrones reportedly confessed to operating the motor vehicle without the consent of the owner, according to the CCSO.
Furthermore, according to the CCSO, Gomez Berrones allegedly confessed to visiting a friend’s house to drink and was subsequently arrested for the motor vehicle accident.
Cameron County Sheriff’s Investigators charged Gomez Berrones with Unauthorized Use of Vehicle; TPC 3107, a State Jail Felony.
