The popular Stripes convenience store located on the corner of South Oscar Williams Rd. in San Benito was reportedly robbed in the early morning hours on New Year’s Day.

According to a City of San Benito press release, on January 1, 2024, at approximately 3:54 a.m., San Benito Police Officers responded to the Stripes convenience store located on South Oscar Williams and North Frontage Rd. for an aggravated robbery that had just occurred.

The suspect was described as a male wearing a black baseball hat, black t-shirt, black shorts, and a black mask, according to the press release.

During the commission of the reported offense, the male subject allegedly displayed and pointed a firearm at a store clerk while demanding money from the cash register. The male subject eventually fled on foot behind the store after reportedly stealing property, including US currency, from the cash register.

It was noted that the male suspect who allegedly committed the robbery had been in the store the day prior wearing the same clothing.

The same male, accompanied by a female, came back into the store the following day, January 2, 2024, and police personnel were contacted once again.

While attempting to locate the male subject, patrol officers met with Cameron County Constable Precinct 3 Deputies at the County Annex Building located across the road, as they were investigating a separate robbery-type incident involving a female. The SBPD robbery suspect accompanied the female in the deputies’ custody, and he was detained shortly thereafter. The male was identified as Reynaldo Lugo IV, a 27-year-old San Benito resident.

After subsequent investigation and interviews with the suspect, SBPD detectives arrested and charged Lugo with Aggravated Robbery, a First Degree Felony. He was given a $150,000 Bond.

Lugo was transported to the Cameron County Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center in Olmito after his arraignment.
