he Christmas spirit was on full display in San Benito this past Saturday as a holiday tradition brought joy to children in the Resaca City.

The Glowing Doves Education Outreach Program held its annual Christmas in the community event this past Saturday.

For the last four years, Glowing Doves’ volunteers have made it their mission every December to bring joy to as many families as possible, collecting and donating hundreds of toys and games to the community youth. This year, the first at the group’s new location in San Benito, nearly 300 locals received Christmas gifts and goody bags.

A steady flow of families walked into the event over a three-hour period with countless smiles at the vast array of gifts scattered over tables. With a collection of items donated from members and community volunteers, this Christmas outreach program is the biggest of the year for the growing organization.

Glowing Doves was created by Pastor Rosie Perales in 2015 when the retired San Benito CISD educator decided she wanted to find a way to help her hometown. Originally based in Raymondville, Perales has been looking for different ways to help out her local community since day one. The non-profit organization moved to San Benito four years ago, and the yearly Christmas giveaway has since become an anticipated event.

“We’re focused on helping the community year-round with many different services and helping families enjoy the holiday is very important to us” said Perales. “You can see the smiles from not just the kids, but the adults, too. It’s a success every year because you can see the impact it has on people from our own community.”
