Ruthella Potter gained a coveted job as a photographer while stationed at Maxwell Field, Alabama. Ruthella, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Potter of San Benito, was assigned to the base photo section.

It took, however, additional training to earn a spot in the Public Affairs Division—requiring four years of experience behind the camera before advancing to the next level.

Due to her ability to expertly handle the camera, she was given the opportunity of photographing the planes stationed at the field, and taking pictures of the men who flew them.

Thought she was free to take photos around the base, the pictures she took were considered sensitive material. Sharing her pieces could bring dire complications if they landed in enemy hands.

Her efficiency with camera and in the darkroom won high praise from the chief of the photo section, and beyond.

It was war time when she enlisted in 1943. It is not known whether San Benito High School had a photo club or whether she was just born to frame a shot.
