Resendez honored with vigil, proclamation

The tributes and recognitions for slain veteran San Benito Police Lieutenant Milton Resendez continue as the San Benito Police Department (SBPD) is hosting a candlelight vigil and one-mile walk to honor and remember a man fellow officers are calling their brother.

The tribute is being held at W.H. Heavin Memorial Park’s amphitheater located at 705 N. Bowie Street, in San Benito on Friday, November 17, 2023 at 6:30 p.m. Organizers are encouraging the public and fellow law enforcement officers to attend.

SBPD volunteers are providing glow sticks and other lighting materials to use during the ceremony. This is a free event.

On Tuesday of this week, a resolution introduced by State Representative Janie Lopez of San Benito commemorating Resendez was passed at the State Capitol in Austin. Several SBPD officers were in attendance representing the SBPD. Just two days later, on Thursday of this week, SBPD officials unveiled a portrait of Resendez at the Darrell B. Hester Juvenile Detention Center located at 2310 US Business 77 in San Benito in honor of the lieutenant.

As previously reported by the NEWS, Resendez was killed in the line of duty on Tuesday night, October 17, 2023 in San Benito during a vehicular pursuit on Sam Houston Blvd.

Resendez, 54, was a 26-year veteran of the SBPD. Resendez was a product of San Benito public schools, graduating as a member of the San Benito High School Class of 1987 and attending Rangerville Elementary, as well as Miller Jordan and Berta Cabaza middle schools.

He later attended Texas Southmost College and the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council Police Academy. Before joining the SBPD, Resendez was employed by the Brownsville Police Department, Palm Valley Police Department, and the San Benito CISD Police Department. All told, he served over 30 years in law enforcement.

According to his obituary, he was an avid comic book and toy collector, movie buff, and enjoyed gardening. He also enjoyed watching his favorite NFL teams, the Pittsburg Steelers and the Houston Texans, as well as watching WWE wrestling. He also enjoyed music; his favorite band was KISS.

Resendez was born September 2, 1969 to Meliton and Susana M. Resendez, who preceded him in death. He’s survived by his wife, Melissa G. Resendez, whom he met while attending Texas Southmost College.
They were married for 27 years upon his death. He’s also survived by his siblings, José De Los Santos Serrato (Olga Mejía), Terry Bell (Paul), Mauricio Resendez, Xavier Resendez, and Jacqueline S. Resendez; numerous nephews and nieces.
