While the undefeated Greyhound football team has understandably captured the attention of the Resaca City, another program in San Benito has quietly asserted itself among the best in the Valley.
The Lady ’Hounds’ Volleyball squad picked up its biggest win of the season last week, snapping a 10-match losing streak to the Harlingen Lady Cardinals with a dramatic 3-1 finish.
San Benito now boasts an impressive 14-6 record, including a 2-1 start to a grueling district schedule.
The home tilt against Harlingen started slowly as the ’Cards stole the first set of the match. The Lady ’Hounds clawed their way back into things with a come-from-behind victory in the second set to tie things up and retake the momentum.
By the end of the third set, San Benito held a commanding 2-1 lead and showed no signs of letting up. The fourth set was little more than a formality as the Lady ’Hounds managed to hand Harlingen its first district loss of the season.
“It obviously felt good to get over that hump and get a victory over a rival team like the Cardinals,” said San Benito Head Volleyball coach Ruby Medina. “We’ve had a successful season so far, and I think all of us are eager to see how long we can continue at this level.”
With only a few games left before the playoffs, San Benito looks poised for just its second playoff appearance since 2016. Currently in sole possession of the number two spot in 32-6A, the Lady ’Hounds are in complete control of their playoff destiny after a solid start to the season.
With Weslaco and Los Fresnos, plus rematches with Rivera and Harlingen, still on its slate of games, San Benito will have to finish the season with one of the four best records in the district.
