RIO HONDO, TX—After an impressive victory over the Hidalgo Pirates a week earlier, the Rio Hondo Bobcat varsity football players sought to continue their winning ways against the Ingleside Mustangs last Friday, Set. 15, 2023.
The game, held at Bobcat Stadium in Rio Hondo, marked Rio Hondo High School’s Homecoming as the ’Cats battled the visiting Ingleside Mustangs. After a hard fought four quarters, the Rio Hondo Bobcats fell short, 57-38, of a homecoming victory.
On the first play of their second possession, the Mustangs rushed into the endzone from the Bobcats’ 30-yard-line to bring the score to 7-0 after a successful extra point attempt.
The Bobcats came back onto the field shaking off the previous drive, but a holding penalty forced the Bobcats to move back on a first-15.
From their own 45-yard-line, Bobcat Keyan Lopez tuned on the jets with a long run, taking the ball all the way down to the five-yard-line. Bobcat quarterback Ruben Atkinson then found Lopez for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was good tying the ball game at seven. The Mustangs came back onto the field and attempted to keep their momentum from the first drive going. A couple of penalties pushed them further back on the field, including a penalty costing them a touchdown.
On a third down, the Mustang were looking to go deep, but that was quickly stopped by a Bobcats’ forced fumble and recovery on the Mustangs 30-yard-line. The Bobcats were not able to convert any points on the turnover and the Mustangs and Bobcats were tied at the end of the first quarter.
At the start of the second quarter, the Mustangs began on their own 27-yard-line looking to break the deadlock. However, a couple of incomplete passes lead to a fourth down where the Mustangs decided to punt the ball. The ‘Cats received the ball and started their drive on their own 26 yard line.
A massive gain of yards by #88, Eddie Martinez gave the Bobcats excellent field possession on the Mustangs 33 yard line. Similarly to the first touchdown, Atkinson found Lopez in the endzone for 6 points. The field goal after the touchdown was successful putting the Bobcats up for the first time in the game 14-7 with nine minutes left to play in the half.
