The San Benito City Commission held a regular meeting this past Tuesday where various topics were addressed, including the need for a near half a million-dollar purchase of a new truck for the public works department as well as new ordinance limiting tow truck prices.
As always, the meeting began with several public comments. Among the commenters was Marta Martinez, the executive director of Monica and Maggie’s house. According to Martinez, the City of San Benito has been instrumental in the victim outreach program by providing funding over the last seven years. While Martinez claims last year’s $12,309 funding covered much of the operating costs of Monica and Maggie’s house, Martinez advised their growing list of services required her to request an increase in funding up to $15,000.
After public comments, the commission would go on to approve several re-plats of land for developers before addressing a set of new ordinances. The most notable changes included requiring all vendors, regardless of affiliation, to obtain a permit for any operation within city limits. Also included was a provision introduced by police chief Mario Perreira to limit the maximum amount tow companies can charge for non-consent towing.
