San Benito area man charged with murder

According to the Cameron County Sherriff’s Office (CCSO), on August 13, 2023, Cameron County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Glenwood Rd. in the San Benito area, in reference to a male subject who had been shot.

Upon arrival, deputies made contact with the homeowner, Pedro Rodriguez and took his statement. As per Rodriguez, he had shot a male subject in self-defense and added that he did not know the male.

According to a CCSO report, as the deputies conducted a walkthrough of the property, they located the lifeless body of Raul Gonzalez, 52-years-old. In addition, alleges the CCSO, the deputies observed that Gonzalez had apparent gunshot wounds to his facial area.

CCSO Investigators quickly arrived, processed the scene, and began interviewing witnesses. During the course of the investigation, it was discovered that Rodriguez was being deceptive on his “self-defense” statement. In addition, investigators found several alleged inconsistencies in the crime scene that did not match Rodriguez’s statement.

After further investigation and based on the evidence, Pedro Rodriguez was placed under arrest and charged with Murder (Criminal Homicide) for the death of Raul Gonzalez. Rodriguez was transported and booked into the Carrizalez-Rucker Cameron County Detention Center, in Olmito. The investigation is ongoing.
