A new law firm has been hired to provide legal services for the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District (SBCISD), following the board decision to terminate its contract with the previous one.

The board members voted unanimously to bring in the Law Office of Tony Torres of Edinburg and sent out Bickerstaff Heath Delgado Acosta LLP during Monday’s, May 22, special meeting.

Sensing the outcome of the agenda item, Steven Weller, an attorney with the previous firm, addressed the board via zoom prior to the meeting, saying they understand if the board parted ways with them.

He said they would like to thank the board for letting them have the opportunity to serve the district.
The firm he works for was hired in 2021 after the board terminated its contract with the law firm of Flores & Torres, also from Edinburg.

The board held a workshop to discuss the 2023-24 budget to be adopted this coming month of June.
Monica Mata, the district’s chief financial officer, gave a good, bad and ugly overview about the finances.
She said the district estimated revenues are at more than $8 million and added they are not going to receive the millions they have been getting in COVID relief funding because of policy changes.

Mata said the district receives funding based on student enrollment.

The number of losses have outnumbered the number of gains in the last six school years.
According to a U.S. News & Work Report, the school district spends more than $12,000 per student each year.

Mata said the district’s proposed tax rate is 0.9252.
