Students attending the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District are going to have to wait a lot longer to use the performing arts and aquatic centers.
The two facilities have been under construction for some time, but are now on hold because of concerns found. That includes foundation discrepancies, beams placement and honey combing, as well as other issues.
Some of these matters were found back in March, 2022, but a few of the school board members did not know until they met on Wednesday, April 5, 2023.
David Allex, principal with ROFA Architects of McAllen, said the two construction projects are now on hold.
“We have stopped working both buildings,” he told the board. “We have no solutions at this time and are trying to find out what to do.”
Allex described the issues as serious. He and Superintendent Theresa Servellon said there is no need for finger pointing as who did what. They also said finding a solution is what matters now.
Allex brought in Ivan Garcia, a professional land surveyor who told the board what he found at the two buildings. He said issues with placing piers on the right location and foundational concerns were discovered.
Rudy Corona, a board member, questioned the lack of transparency as he was not aware of the March 2022 findings until this past week.
The two projects were part of a $40 million bond issue approved by the voters in 2018.
