Three men are vying for the mayoral seat during the upcoming May 6 elections: commissioner Rene Garcia, incumbent Rick Guerra and former mayor Ben Gomez.
Rene Garcia, who currently sits on the city commission, said that San Benito had stalled in its growth several years ago and has now rebounded, but that much more work needs to be done.
“It’s definitely time to improve the living conditions of San Benito…We have some infrastructure that’s decaying that was built 100 years ago. We need to prepare San Benito for another 100 years,” Garcia said.
Garcia added that water is a major issue for San Benito, saying he thinks it’s time the city prepares for floods and fully prepares its water system.
“I believe my background and education in business administration will help how we negotiate and effectively communicate with other entities like the federal government, and state government where we can put San Benito first,” he said.
Ricardo “Rick” Guerra, vying for a second term as Mayor of the City of San Benito, said that there is still a lot more work to do to move the city forward. The retired firefighter and San Benito native said there is a need to address San Benito’s water issue, worsened by drought conditions, mentioning the receding resaca.
