Despite the basketball season ending nearly two months ago for San Benito, the accolades continue to pile up for the teams’ most talented ballers.
Angelina Reyes, who led the team in scoring for the second consecutive year despite being a sophomore, along with Ava Garza and Jasmin Martinez will be featured in the South Texas Area Regional Showcase (STARS) basketball tournament on April 15 in Edinburg. From the boys side, Chris Thrialkill, the 32-6A Player of the year, will be joined by senior DeAnthony Mireless in representing the district champion Greyhounds.
The tournament will take place at the RGV Vipers practice facility and will feature top girls basketball players from every school in South Texas.
Chosen by a prestigious panel of coaches and media members from San Antonio to La Joya and back down to Brownsville, 65 of the top girl hoopers will be divided into six teams. The tournament-style games will be played over a two-day period with a championship trophy given out and post-season awards announced at the end of the second day.
The boys bracket will also be composed of six teams and will have the same play schedule as the girls. The STARS tournament will be broadcast live by Rio Sports Live and is expected to attract countless high-level scouts from colleges across the State.
“We’re very excited about this opportunity for our athletes and hope this can catapult someone into scholarship contention,” said longtime Lady ’Hound Basketball Coach Abel Moreno. “For five players from our program to be chosen as the best in South Texas is almost unfathomable coming from an established football school… It goes to show that with team success comes individual awards.”
