BROWNSVILLE—Cameron County and area municipalities received a combined total of nearly $9 million from the Texas General Land Office (GLO) for infrastructure projects and recovery efforts post the 2019 flooding disasters, the office of Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino Jr. reported this week. Rio Hondo is on tap to receive a portion of those funds.
According to the judge’s office, on March 21, 2023, Cameron County and the municipalities of Combes, La Feria, Laguna Vista, Port Isabel, Primera, Rio Hondo and Santa Rosa were awarded a combined total of nearly $9 million for recovery, improvement and infrastructure projects, as a result of the 2019 flooding disasters.
The Texas General Land Office (GLO) announced $43,144,626 in disaster recovery funds for 44 federally eligible infrastructure projects to help communities recover from the 2019 South Texas Floods as well as Tropical Storm Imelda. The awarded funding will be used for critical quality of life improvement projects such as street, water and drainage facility improvements, Trevino noted.
The following local projects were selected and awarded funding by the GLO:
• Cameron County: Adams Garden Drainage Project: $1 million;
• Combes: City of Combes Sewer System Lift Station Improvements (2019): $1 million;
• La Feria: City of La Feria Drainage Improvements (Install 60” RCP): $1 million;
• Laguna Vista: Town of Laguna Vista Drainage Improvements, Palm Blvd. Area: $975,174.00
• Port Isabel: Pennsylvania Avenue Drainage Improvements: $1 million
• Primera: City of Primera Sewer System Improvements (2019): $1 million
• Rio Hondo: City of Rio Hondo Catherine Drainage Project: $1 million
• Santa Rosa: Ovalle Lateral Drainage Improvements: $995,484.05, South West Ditch Drainage Improvements: $991,195.60
