Two on-going projects at the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District are not anywhere near completion, and the delay could well go into the middle of 2024, according to officials.
The district’s board of trustees learned the latest during a project update given at Tuesday’s March 21 meeting.
The two projects are the Performing Arts and Aquatic Centers – two endeavors approved by the voters in 2018 as part of a $40 million bond program.
Mike Allex, principal with ROFA Architects of McAllen, gave the update effective this past Tuesday, March 21. He put the projects’ progress at 33.5 percent, sharply contrasting a previous report that put the numbers at 85 percent.
Also, Allex estimated a completion date of up to the first half of 2024, not at the end of this year. He said some of the issues encountered include the shifting of the foundation on one of the construction sites and it’s something that needs to be corrected.
The update was a head scratcher for some trustees who are eager to have them completed for the benefit of the students.
Construction of the two projects, plus two others, were approved during the previous administration and are costing a lot more and taking more to complete due to a number of counterproductive actions, as pointed out in the forensic report.
In other business, the board approved purchases of more than $25,000 and an engagement letter between San Benito CISD and Carr, Riggs & Ingram, LLC, as an extension of auditing services.
Earlier during the meeting, the board recognized a number of schools and students for excelling in sports.
