A Cinderella season for the Lady ’Hounds basketball team came to screeching halt last week when San Benito fell to the Laredo United Longhorns, 81-44. Despite the loss, the Lady ’Hounds can celebrate one of the most successful seasons in school history after capturing their first Bi-District Championship since 2017.
Just two years ago, the San Lady ’Hounds were at the bottom of the totem pole in District 32-6A, posting a putrid 2-10 district record.
With one of the youngest rosters in the Valley, including two freshmen and three sophomores among their top contributors, San Benito was banking on experience leading to rapid improvement. Under the guidance of longtime head coach Abel Moreno, the Lady ’Hounds made tremendous strides the next season, finishing with a 17-19 overall record while missing out on the playoffs by one game.
Fast forward to this season and San Benito was able to turn in its second-best season of the last 20 years, finishing with 24 total wins and a return trip to the playoffs.
“We never stopped growing and fighting all season,” said Moreno. “I’m proud of what this team accomplished on the court, but their ability to continue to learn and let me coach them is what I’m most proud of. The future is as bright as ever for Lady ‘Hounds’ basketball and we will build off the success of this season.”
While the Lady ’Hounds were able to lean on their ferocious team defense, their offense was spearheaded by sophomore superstar Angelina Reyes. The 5’5 guard turned in a spectacular individual campaign, scoring at a nearly 17-point-per-game pace.
