A season that could already be called the greatest in school history just added another milestone. The Greyhound basketball team captured its first bi-district championship in more than 15 years Tuesday night, Feb. 21, with a 21-point blowout over the Economedes Jaguars in Edinburg. It was a wire-to-wire victory for San Benito as the Greyhounds have now won ten of their last 11 contests.

The Jaguars came in to the game as the fourth seed in District 31-6A and were able to sneak into the playoffs by winning a play-in game after the conclusion of the regular season. While San Benito was the heavy favorite, a 21-point win in the playoffs is no small accomplishment.

“Going forward, every game is win or go home, so we don’t take any victory lightly,” said second year head coach Luis Garza. “We reiterate to the players that we need to treat every game like it’s our last because it might be if we don’t play our game. It doesn’t matter who we play. We’re going to play our game and leave it all out on the court every night.”

San Benito’s season will continue in the area round where it will face the 29-6 San Antonio Warren Warriors.

While Warren is currently on a 13-game win streak, San Benito has been a team on a mission all season.

The ’Hounds might not have the size to matchup across the board, but the progression of senior big man Chris Thrailkill has been the catalyst to San Benito’s season and if he can turn in another perfect performance, the Purple and Gold could be on to the third round of the playoffs for the first time in the program’s history.

Thrailkill, along with shooters DeAnthony Mireless and Tayshaun Corbin, have formed one of the most potent three headed monsters in the Valley this season. With all three turning in superb football campaigns earlier in the year, that “war dog” mentality has been a big reason for the Greyhounds’ historic season.
