Something is cooking at the San Benito Consolidate Independent District.
Besides teaching its student body the essentials of education – reading, writing and arithmetic – the district here is now embarking in another subject, with the goal to certify some of its graduates to work in the gastronomy industry.
School officials are gung-ho about creating a culinary program that could ultimately produce some of the Rio Grande Valley’s future top chefs.
A culinary class has been offered at the district for the last three years.
Fernando Rosa, the district’s director of career and technical education, said the district is now working on a program to certify those who prefer working in commercial kitchens, whether these be in hotels or restaurants.
According to Rosa, the plan is to add two more classes and an additional chef to teach students about the arts of cooking gourmet foods. Another plan is to offer culinary sessions on Saturday to introduce the program and to get the community involved.
Rosa made a presentation about the program during Tuesday’s, Feb. 7, Building Committee meeting.
He said building a state-of-the-art kitchen is essential for the success of the program.
