Brazil Classic set for Saturday

NEWS Staff Report

The 2023 Sonny Brazil Classic Livestock Show is set for this Saturday, January 28, 2023 at San Benito CISD’s Veterans Memorial Academy Sonny Brazil Agricultural Science Complex, 2115 N. Oscar Williams Rd. in San Benito.

The event, sponsored by the San Benito Future Farmers of America (FFA), is a precursor to the Cameron County Fair & Livestock Show in Los Fresnos (held in conjunction with the Los Fresnos Rodeo), and the Rio

Grande Valley Livestock Show in Mercedes, slated for the coming months.

In a prepared statement, San Benito CISD Director of Public Relations Isabel Gonzalez wrote, “The Sonny Brazil Classic helps prepare student participants in showcasing their livestock for upcoming major stock shows. They gain an impartial insight on where they may need to improve on their projects as they prepare for their end point at the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show held mid-March in Mercedes, Texas.”

Currently, students are exercising and weighing their projects on a daily basis. This weekend, students will show their animals to qualified judges which, in turn, will rank the student projects and select champions among the different project categories.

Judges will explain to the students and the crowd their reasoning as it relates to their decision of ranking the projects. Throughout the process, students learn and apply leadership and decision-making skills along with practicing their showmanship skills.
