With the girls’ basketball playoffs less than three weeks away, the San Benito Lady ’Hounds’ Varsity Basketball Team is already on the verge of clinching its first playoff spot since the 2017 season.
With a whopping 21 wins in the first 30 games, San Benito has been on a historic pace all season while carrying their non-district success into the toughest district in the region. After starting 2-0 in their district slate, the Lady ’Hounds saw their winning streak snapped by Harlingen before bouncing back with a major victory over the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons this past Tuesday.
Entering the game against the Lady Cardinals, San Benito was on a five-game winning streak led by sophomore Angelina Reyes’ 20 points per game scoring pace. While Reyes and the Lady ’Hounds got out to a decent start, trailing by just three points at halftime, the size of Harlingen was just too much to handle. With Reyes losing her hot hand in the third period, the Lady ’Cards were able to put a stranglehold on the game while outscoring the Purple and Gold 18-2 in the lopsided quarter. Despite outscoring Harlingen 10-2 in the fourth and final period, San Benito dropped its first district game of the season by a score of 40-28.
“We lost focus after the first half, and I think our girls got a little bit discouraged after Harlingen went on a big run to start to the second half,” said San Benito Head Coach Abel Moreno. “The most important thing for us after a quarter like that is to move on, but use it as a learning experience… Later in the season, if a team goes on a run like that, we will respond better.”
Harlingen is currently the number one team in District 32-6A with a 4-0 district mark, while more than doubling their opponents point total over that span. Just five days after its “Battle of the Arroyo” clash, San Benito hit the court with another top team.
The Los Fresnos Lady Falcons, sporting an impressive 23-6 overall record, paid a visit to San Benito this past Tuesday in what turned into a heavyweight battle down the stretch.
