After a brutal start to its season, one that saw it drop seven of its first eight games, the San Benito Greyhound Varsity Basketball Team has gotten out to a perfect start to its district schedule. San Benito kicked off its 2023 slate of games with a thrilling 42-40 victory over the rival Harlingen Cardinals before collecting a huge 58-50 upset of the Los Fresnos Falcons.
Despite its sordid start to the season, second year head coach Luis Garza maintained high expectations for his squad. The former Brownsville Porter coach took over a program that had mustered just four wins the previous year and turned them into a playoff contender. Now, as the team enters the second season in Garza’s system, the improvements are easy to see.
“It’s a tough district, but when I accepted the job here, the goal was to become a consistent playoff team,” said Garza. “We came up just short in year one, but this could definitely be a special season for us… Everyone is more experienced in the system, and we have some of the best athletes in the Valley.”
With three of its current starters missing the first month of the season, San Benito stumbled out to a 1-7 record. Once the team got to full strength, however, its been one of the most impressive teams in the Valley, posting a 5-1 record while scoring 55 points per game.
