With the district basketball season set to kick off next week for the Greyhounds, one of the biggest games of the year will be first on the schedule.
San Benito will kick off its journey to the playoffs by visiting the Harlingen Cardinals for the first of two Battles of the Arroyo on the court this season on January 13. Despite a rough non-district schedule that saw the Greyhounds drop eight of their first 11 games, records will get thrown out the window once district play starts.
San Benito will be entering the second year under head coach Luis Garza and top assistant Aldo Pinon. After finishing one game out of the final playoff spot in 32-6A last year, Garza is hoping to break the four year playoff drought in his sophomore season at the helm for the purple and gold.
“We are in one of the toughest districts in the Valley, and that’s something we have to account for when evaluating the progress of our program,” said Garza. “We have high expectations and now that our team is pretty much at full strength, I expect us to pile up some wins.”
Always a powerhouse, and led by scoring machine Ryan Sanchez, Harlingen will provide a great measuring stick for San Benito right out of the gate. Despite a 9-15 non-district record, the Cardinals are expected to be one of the top teams in 32-6A after finishing in third place last year. Sanchez, who has been one of the most prolific scorers in the Valley since his debut, is currently averaging just shy of 20 points per game and will undoubtedly be the key to victory for the Cardinals.
