Christmas might still be a few days away, but Santa came early for dozens of families in San Benito last week. The Glowing Doves Educational Community Outreach program has been finding ways to serve Resaca City for over three years now and their Christmas project has grown to one of the biggest in the Valley.
Despite a sudden burst of cold weather on Saturday, nearly 200 people stopped by the organization’s Christmas gift giveaway where group leaders were handing out Christmas presents to kids of all ages. In addition to the gifts, tamale plates, cupcakes and hot chocolate were served to a whopping total of 173 people.
“There’s so much bad news going around the world so it was just important to us to be able to bring joy this Christmas season,” said program director Rosie Perales. “Our goal is to make sure everyone can enjoy the holidays and this is just a small gesture towards that goal.”
Glowing Doves was created by Perales and her family back in 2015 and was originally based in Raymondville. Now going on four years since moving to San Benito, Glowing Doves has evolved into a multi-faceted outreach program that does everything from helping feed the hungry to offering educational and life skill classes.
