Area residents seeking shelter from this weekend’s cold snap that could result in freezing temperatures for one or two nights are encouraged to go to the warming center the City of San Benito now has in place.
It is located at the city’s Community Center at 210 E. Heywood St.
The emergency shelter and preparations were announced during the Tuesday, Dec. 20, meeting of the city council.
Fred Bell, the city’s assistant manager, said they are prepared to handle people needing assistance this weekend.
The weather forecast calls for temperatures in the low to upper 20s for Friday night, low 30s for Saturday night and upper 40s for Sunday night for San Benito and its surrounding areas.
Bell said they have a number of cots available on a first-come, first- serve basis and pointed out people need to bring blankets, pillows, needed medications and toiletries.
Also, registered service dogs will be allowed.
Anybody needing more information can call the city’s police department at (956) 361-3880.
In another matter, Police Chief Mario Perea said last Saturday’s, Dec. 17, Toys for Tots effort was a success.
He said more than 550 toys were distributed and those left behind will be distributed at a later date.
In other business, the council approved:
• A second and final reading to re-zone 15 acres on Yost Road.
• Two re-plating applications, one at a property on Diana Street and the other on West Robertson Street.
• A verbal resignation of Juan Garcia from the City of San Benito Zoning Board of Adjustment, Place 5.
• Signing the Community Development Block Grant award to the Court Appointed Special Advocates, or Casa, of Cameron and Willacy counties, Cameron County Children’s Advocacy Center, or Maggie’s House, and Sunshine Haven Inc. Each entity will receive a grant for $12,800.
