Tuesday’s regular San Benito CISD meeting saw the appointment of new officer Frutoso M. Gomez, Jr., now replacing Janie Lopez for Place 7, as Lopez was recently elected the District 37 state representative and was required to resign from her position with the district before being sworn into office on Jan. 10, 2023.

The reorganization of board officers ensued, with Ramiro Moreno, nominated by Oscar Medrano, gathering four votes against Ariel Cruz, who was nominated by Orlando Lopez.

Mario Silva, nominated by Medrano, won the position of Vice-President after receiving four votes against Ariel Cruz, once again nominated by Orlando Lopez.

Medrano became the board secretary after receiving four votes. Medrano was nominated by Moreno and ran against Rudy Corona, who was nominated by Orlando Lopez.

Later in the meeting, Chief Financial Officer Monica Mata presented the external audit report from earlier this year.

The board received a TEA letter in April which found four main issues the district did not comply with its district accounting (which had significant deficiencies in internal controls), bank reconciliations were months behind, capital assets of which the listing provided were incomplete, and maintenance of effort, recalling the over $700,000 that was sent back to the state earlier this year.
