The San Benito Greyhounds finished one of their most impressive regular seasons ever with another blowout victory, toppling the third ranked Weslaco Panthers, 44-10 in Weslaco last week.
The victory cemented the ’Hounds as the number two seed in District 32-6A with a 4-1 district record and a 9-1 mark overall.
Entering the game, Weslaco had its eyes set on stealing the number two seed from the ’Hounds, but San Benito’s unforgiving rushing attack prevented any kind of upset. San Benito’s Fabian Garcia and Atticus De Leon found early running room, but the Panthers were able to match an early score by San Benito. Midway through the first quarter, Weslaco scored a touchdown that pushed the score to 21-10 with the Panther crowd starting to come alive.
San Benito ultimately cruised to victory behind the legs of Garcia and DeLeon and the usual suffocating nature of the Greyhound defense. By the end of the contest, Garcia (167) and Deleon (100) had accounted for well over half of the 418 total yards the ’Hounds racked up as well as five of the teams’ six touchdowns.
Garcia finished his junior season as one of the most productive players in the entire state, posting a ridiculous 1,851 yards and 24 touchdowns while routinely getting pulled from games in the second half of blowout wins.
