RIO HONDO—Despite a rough start to the season, the Rio Hondo Bobcats find themselves back in the playoffs for the first time since 2019.
The young Bobcats dropped their first four games of the season before winning five of their last six, including a 20-14 victory over Lyford in their season finale that gave them a share of the District 16-3A Championship. Rio Hondo finished the regular season with a 5-5 record, but were able to go 4-1 in district play to share the district title with San Diego.
During their winning streak, the Bobcats were fueled by a high powered offense led by sophomores Ruben Atkinson and Gavin Perez. The quarterback/receiver tandem developed a chemistry that was difficult for other teams to account for as Rio Hondo averaged 31 points per game over its final six contests.
“I’m so proud of our guys and the fact that we never gave up on the season,” said Bobcat Head Coach Rocky James. “We have a lot of young guys in leadership positions and it would have been easy to get demoralized after our slow start, but they kept fighting and got us to a district championship for the first time in a few years.”
