RIO HONDO—On October 20, 2022, A Cameron County Sherriff’s Deputy, assigned to the patrol unit of the agency, responded to the intersection of FM 1846 and FM 106 in Rio Hondo in reference to a major traffic accident.
According to a Cameron County Sheriff’s Office press release, upon the deputy’s arrival on the scene, the Texas Highway Patrol, Union Pacific Police and the Rio Hondo Police Department had secured the perimeter.
Based on the preliminary investigation, the driver of the pickup truck was traveling northbound on FM 1846 when she collided into the locomotive.
The driver, along with her five-year-old child, were able to exit the vehicle before it engulfed into flames. The initial observations showed that the railroad crossing warning lights were activated.
The fire was extinguished by the fire department and no injuries were reported. Texas Highway Patrol and Union Pacific Police took over the investigation.
