TKO delivers message to Uvalde children, community

David Leija said he first felt a stir in his heart to create the Tolerance Kindness Overcomes (TKO) Movement in 2018 after 11-year-old Bethany Thompson and 18-year-old Brandy Vela died by suicide after being bullied.

Recently, following the shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, TX, TKO president and founder Leija was spurred into action to bring TKO to soothe the community in mourning. Leija traveled the 312 miles from greyhound country to the El Progresso Library for a reading of his book, TK’s First Lesson.

On Tuesday, the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District announced it has secured support from donors for the construction of a new elementary school. Robb Elementary, the site where a gunman killed 21 people is set to be demolished.

Leija’s book is one tool in his mission to bring into reality a more caring community and nation.

The story centers around two tiger siblings to teach readers the value of diversity and inclusion. Leija firmly believes that just as a child is born without prejudice or hatred in their heart, love, compassion, and kindness can be taught and fostered.
