For the last two decades, the Honorable David Garza has been an integral part of his community. For his continued service and dedication to his job, Garza has been named the 2016 San Benito News Citizen of the Year. A member of the 1977 graduating class of San Benito High, Garza has established himself as one of the most respected city officials in recent memory.
During his time at SBHS, Garza spent most of his time in sports. While he took part in every sport he could, baseball always took first priority as his favorite sport. After graduating, Garza went on to Southmost College to earn a degree in business.
“I always find it funny how I went to school and got my degree in business, but then ended up in a judiciary position,” said Garza. “I just really love dealing with people directly and I though this job would be a perfect fit.”garza1

Garza noted that he contemplated working for the school district as well as a position in city management before he decided on running for Justice of the Peace.
“I thought about the school district and the city, but I really wanted a job where I would be independent,” he said. “I researched all the opportunities and sure enough Justice of the Peace was my number one option.”
So, in 1996, Garza started to involve himself in the judicial field in San Benito. Two years later, on May 10, 1998, Garza secured his position as a Justice of the Peace.
