Sometimes in order to get the recognition you deserve, you have to go out and do something that is beyond what many consider to be “the norm.”  So, when 30-year old freelance comic strip writer Jason Ryan Guelker decided to put together his latest comic book pitch, he wasn’t going to put together your common super hero story about a man with super human strength that saves the day and gets the girl. Instead, he had a whole different, extremely unique idea to bring to the table.

“My story takes place here in Austin and is about a Hispanic werewolf super hero.  His grandfather was a super hero werewolf in Mexico City and his mother was also one in San Antonio,” said Guelker, who is a 2003 San Benito High School graduate that has been living in Austin for the last six years.

The pitch was so unique that it caught the attention of a New York-based publisher and landed Guelker his first official deal since he decided to enter the field of comic-book writing several years ago.
This November, his script entitled, “Lycanthroman” (lycanthropy is the fictional disease that causes werewolves), is scheduled to be published by Alterna Press in their upcoming anthology entitled “If,” with artist Kelly Williams illustrating the tale.

“I started getting into comic books when I was a kid reading Sonic the Hedge Hog,” said Guelker.  “Then I got into X-men, but it was later on down the road when I read Joe Hill’s “Locke and Key” series that I really decided to start writing comics. I’m a big fan of monsters so that’s where the werewolf part came into play.”

“My ultimate dream is to one day be like the Stephen King of comic books.  I want to make a full-time living off writing,” he added.

Guelker is a native of Brownsville but eventually moved to San Benito, where he attended high school and was even part of the 2003 Bi-District Championship Greyhound baseball squad.
