Over 18 members of the San Benito CISD and San Benito City Commission came together for a special joint meeting on Wednesday night to begin preliminary talks on a number of different issues.
Led by SBCISD Superintendent Dr. Adrian Vega and San Benito Mayor Celeste Sanchez, the two entities discussed the possibility of spirit projects throughout the city, the need to develop a formal agreement on inter-local facility use, and the approval to form a committee to look into the feasibility of a new aquatic center.

  1. It’s great that the city and school district politicians want to expand our after school athletic programs but aquatic center? The school can even increase or let me say upgrade our girls softball stadium to accommodate our fans. Let me guess, Joe G GONZALEZ is behind the multi million dollar aquatic center just like he pushed for the new football stadium we didn’t need. It’s very obvious he’s just looking to make a few extra coins… That’s his MO…. Welcome to San Benito’s finest!

So Tio, your’e basically saying we don’t need an aquatic center because you believe a public servant is behind it? Wasn’t the meeting called by the City NOT by the school district? I find it hard to believe that one man on a 5 person city commission or a 7 person school board could wield so much power. If that was the case why not anoint himself Mayor and be done with it.

Now back to reality. San Benito is a 6A district. Districts our size around us already have aquatic centers. Their students already compete against each other. Ask yourself this, do OUR students not deserve to have this chance to compete? The city pool issue has been hot topic issue going on for years now. Do our community kids not deserve somewhere new and nice to not only go play in, but to learn how to swim? You see the problem with “San Benito’s finest” cliche’ you talk about is that your narrow mindedness leads you to think that only your opinion matters. The aquatic center would be a great idea if only you had thought about it first. I commend Mr. Gonzalez and any other city leader for any ideas that can improve not just our schools, but our city as well. If you don’t agree with it Tio, there’s an easy solution. Put your name on the ticket and lets see how it goes. 🙂

It is not a question of What the citizens need. The need is there!

The city needs an aquatic center, a swimming pool, a splash pad, better streets, and definitely more businesses to not only provide more sales tax dollars but to attract other businesses and citizens to move here.

The real question is What can the city AFFORD to build?

When the topic of increased school or city taxes is brought up, the complaints begin. Next year is an election year so, right on cue, the talk/promises are beginning; forget about how we are going to pay for it.

Don’t fall for this pre-election year mumbo-jumbo. These elected officials who have been elected & re-elected over and over again without delivering is the “problem with San Benito”.

My first question to the elected officials would be “How are you going to pay for it?”

If you want change, you need to elect NEW qualified individuals. Personally, I am not impressed with any of the elected officials. Before somebody spouts our Why don’t you run for office!”, I am not a taxpayer in San Benito.

You replaced the previous mayor, now replace the city commission.

It is great that city leadership and school administration are coming together on these projects. Could we also do some coming together on the starting time for schools next year? In my opinion, children are already starting school while being tired and sleepy. Children ,who use bus transportation, are going to be waiting in even darker areas which are dangerous. I understand bus routes are an issue. Why can’t the start times remain and the extra time be added to the end of the day?
