This year can pretty much be summed up in two words- Roller coaster. The Lady ‘Hounds topped the majority of headlines early in the year with their historic Final Four championship run, and the Greyhound’s football squad even had an impressive history-making season themselves. But it was unexpected deaths and even a rare tragic murder that proved to catch the attention of most readers this year. The NEWS saw its most attention-seeking story online ever when an exclusive story was released about the murder of 19-year old Christopher Gallegos after an altercation at a graduation party back in June.  The story was followed by the unexpected death of City Manager Manuel Lara, as well as several other local citizens who died as the result of various unrelated circumstances. Everything from motorcycle and car accidents, to illnesses, to even a couple tragic/fatal bee-sting incidents all proved to stun the community and make for some of the top stories of the year. In the end, the NEWS comprised its top 5 based on online and social-media attention and views, which includes a story from this past week when a devastating house explosion occurred in the La Paloma area on Christmas Day.
