Don’t be alarmed if you hear the sound of shotgun fire for the next couple of months. It’s just that time of year again — dove hunting season! Last year, Texas set a record for the number of doves killed with 1.8 million birds harvested, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
Dove hunting season runs from September 1st – October 25th this year, and based on population census data, there should be plenty for local area hunters to find. White winged and Mourning doves are Texas’s most abundant game bird.
“We’re expecting and hoping for another great hunting season,” said Cameron County Game Warden Daniel Cantu. “Last year was the most productive season we’ve had, but I think this year could be even more productive.”
