Although Christmas is still four months away, you’d never know that by walking in to the Elks Lodge on Saturday morning. It almost seemed like the final scene of a Disney movie, with kids laughing and smiling while feasting on a seemingly endless supply of pizza. The 14 kids from Ershabbi Church in San Benito had just been treated to a morning of shopping for school supplies, back-to-school clothes, and free haircuts thanks to Elks Lodge No. 1661 and J.C. Penny in Harlingen.
Although J.C. Penny doesn’t usually open until 9 a.m., they made an exception for the kids from the Elks Lodge, who have been running this program for the last four or five years, according to member Lucy Groh. “The staff at J.C. Penny was wonderful, they were very accommodating to us as they always are,” she said. “They gave great discounts and even opened the store an hour early for us so we could get in and get out as smoothly as possible.”
