A man with seven young children crammed into a Dodge Durango was arrested after leading police on a brief pursuit last Thursday, police said. The man was evading police after allegedly shoplifting from the local H-E-B and eventually charged with Abandoning/Endangering a Child and Evading Arrest which are both state jail felonies, in addition to the misdemeanor theft charge.
According to San Benito police, Ashley Daniel Perez, 27, was reported to police by an H-E-B employee after taking two baby bottles and two deodorants without paying. When police arrived to the store, they saw a vehicle matching the reported description attempting to exit out the side of the store towards Stenger Street. “As the officer was arriving on the scene, he saw the vehicle driving pretty fast out of the parking lot,” said San Benito Assistant Police Chief Michael Galvan. “He drove a little less than a quarter of a mile before finally pulling over at his house.”
