Overcoming Adversity- Moreno beats the odds on path to success

A couple years ago, with the end of his junior year in sight, all Jorge Adrian Moreno could think about was acing his finals and enjoying his long awaited summer. Unfortunately, life had other plans. “I ended up having to spend the end of my junior year and most of the summer in the hospital… they even had to postpone my final exams,” said Moreno.

It was a sudden shock for the Moreno family when their otherwise healthy 17-year-old son started losing feeling in the left side of his body. It took doctors about two weeks to diagnose Moreno with Miller Fisher syndrome, a rare, acquired nerve disease that is characterized by abnormal muscle coordination, paralysis of the eye muscles, and absence of the tendon reflexes.
