It was a very tough scene to watch Wednesday morning at a rural residence on Los Amigos Street off of North Sam Houston Blvd., where a 7-year old horse named “Donkey” laid desperately fighting for his life.  As you arrived to the scene, it seemed like just another average call of a bee attack, but as San Benito Firefighters neared the backyard area where the event was unfolding, it became clear that the incident was an immediate emergency situation.  Donkey, as named by his owner, Antonio Sosa, had been viciously attacked by hundreds, possibly thousands of bees after wandering near a hive that officials said measured about 5-feet tall by 5-feet wide, which can easily house over 60,000 bees, according to www.backyardbeekeepers.com.  Donkey continued to fight for over an hour, constantly galloping back on his feet, but then falling back down after only a minute or two.  But in the end, the overpowering crowd of bees was too much for Donkey, and he died at the scene there on Los Amigos St.  Owners were desperately trying to get a hold of a veterinarian, but were unable to find one that specialized in large animals on such short notice.  According to Sosa, “Donkey” was a rescue horse from Lozano that was originally purchased by his brother.
