When ’Hounds coach Eddie Abrego said after last week’s win over Lopez that District 32-6A is tough, he wasn’t kidding.

The ’Hounds, sitting at 2-1 in league play, went to Harlingen South Tuesday night to face the 2-1 Hawks, who’d just fallen to league leader Hanna, in a pivotal game to stay a game back of the Golden Eagles.

The result? A hard-fought, 54-50 win for South on a night when the Greyhounds started slow but finished strong.

South held a 17-11 edge after the first period thanks to a red-hot start from Christian Pena, who had 10 points in the period, including two three-point shots. By half, Pena had 14 points and Luke Bradford had eight as the Hawks extended the lead to 30-19 at intermission.

San Benito (12-12 overall, 2-2 district) went cold in the second quarter, tallying just eight points. The ’Hounds were led by Jordan Briones’ six points, while Cristian Sierra had five, all in the first quarter.

After Abrego rallied the troops at intermission, a different San Benito team came out of the locker room.

The ’Hounds outran South 15-9 in the period, paced by two big threes from Joey Salcedo and five points from Eddie Delgado. The defense put the clamps on the Hawks, limiting them to just nine points in the quarter.

A wild fourth quarter saw the ’Hounds have their best offensive quarter as Mario Aguirre nailed two from downtown and Salcedo hit his third from beyond the arc. However, South battled back with 15 points, enough to keep San Benito at bay and escape with a win.

Scoring for the ’Hounds were Salcedo (14 points), Aguirre (11), Briones, Delgado and Sierra each had eight points while Smiley Escamilla had 1 point.

The ’Hounds host the first place Golden Eagles on Tuesday night as district play continues.
