The City of San Benito and its officials are in a hurry to spend $1 million in grant money to establish the long-awaited San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum, which will be built at Plaza San Benito. Additionally, architects have been hired to draft sketches for the immediate erection of the new structure.

At a regular meeting of the San Benito City Commission on Jan. 6, and after a seven-year wait, San Benito city officials voted in favor of establishing the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum on 220 E. Stenger St. rather than Business 77 and the resaca.

The certificate of obligation for building the museums is from 2007. This is 2015. The responsibility is with the City Manager. Enough said.
The City Manager has known about the water plant problems since he got here eight years ago. Duh.

Sorry to disappoint you but the City Manager has no “decision making powers” when it relates to Certificates of Obligations, General Obligations, Tax Anticipation Notes, etc..

The City Manager and staff, at the direction of the City Commission, simply prepare the documentation in concert with the financial advisor and bond counsel for “final approval” by the City Commission.

The City Commission decides WHAT will be funded, the AMOUNT to be funded, etc. prior to issuing the bonds and WHEN it will be implemented once the bonds are sold.

The City Manager and staff simply follow the wishes of the City Commission.

I am still waiting for the “Street Lights” that have been discussed and changed so many times I have lost count. They just seem to experience a difficult time deciding the type of lighting to purchase, the locations, etc.

I empathize and share your frustration but I believe you are focusing the responsibility in the wrong direction.

For all those educated people on the commission, you would think someone would have done a better job of reading the fine print. Ger this done and concentrated on the streets, crime and beautification of our city.
This City has a looooong way to go. Together we can move this city forward with new commissioners coming in May.

The city of San Benito and its officials must have really been pressured to spend my grant money. It most likely had a deadline on when the grant had to be used by.
Maybe next time the city of San Benito and its officials will read what they sign and agreed to.
