Repair work is still underway at two San Benito streets due to delays associated with the relocation of gas lines at one road and inclement weather at the other.

The reconstruction of Shafer Road in San Benito has been stalled due to gas lines that require relocating, according to Mayor Celeste Sanchez. She said it’s a setback that the city is currently working in conjunction with Texas Gas Service to resolve.

A portion of McCullough Street leading toward Line 17 Road is also earmarked for construction but inclement weather recently experienced has delayed its completion, Sanchez further noted.

“The update we got is that they did one side of the road and now they need to do the other side of the road,” Sanchez said of what the San Benito City Commission was last briefed about with regard to the street reconstruction project.

The Commission, in the meantime, has moved forward with the approval of a $24,000 change order to go toward McCullough and Line 17’s reconstruction work. As previously reported, McCullough was originally approved in April 2013 for reconstruction from Line 17 to Business 77. What the change order made funded was eight inches of flex base.

Sanchez had previously said that four inches were supposed to be of new material while the other four inches were planned to consist of salvaged material. It wasn’t until construction crews sent the flex base material to be salvaged for a lab analysis that it was deemed unusable.

In response to the delays, Sanchez said she hopes that work can quickly begin in hopes of completing the Shafer and McCullough street reconstruction.

“I want them done,” she said. “It seems to me like it’s taken longer, but I’m not involved in road construction. It’s just that to me, it’s taken too long; especially Shafer Road.”

Attempts to reach City Manager Manuel Lara for comment were unsuccessful as of press time. However, it should be noted that the Thanksgiving holiday moved up the Nov. 26 San Benito News edition’s editorial deadline was to Monday, Nov. 24.
