Elementary campuses’ enrollment in decline

Enrollment numbers at San Benito CISD campuses show a slight increase from the 2013-14 school year but one that also continues a noticeable decline identified at the elementary schools.

Specifically, Landrum Elementary’s first day enrollment on Monday, Aug. 25, was 260 students – down from 266, which was already considered low, the year prior. Rangerville Elementary fell from 364 students on the first day of school last year to 342 on Monday; Frank Roberts Elementary from 404 to 374, Dr. Garza Elementary from 391 to 380, Fred Booth from 535 to 519, Judge Oscar De La Fuente Elementary from 418 to 411 and Angela G. Leal Elementary from 500 to 462.

Elementary campuses that experienced an increase in student enrollment were Dr. Cash (587), Ed Downs (465), La Encantada (539) and La Paloma (407). Sullivan Elementary remained at 449 for the second consecutive year.

What’s more, the combined enrollment total for the school district’s 12 elementary campuses fell from 5,284 to 5,198 – a loss of 86 students. SBCISD elementary campuses lost 99 students the year prior.

Secondary campuses enjoyed 101 more students on Monday with 5,013 reported on the first day of school compared to 4,912 last year. San Benito High School enrolled 1,805 the first day, which is up from the 1,741 reported in 2013. San Benito Veterans Memorial Academy enrolled 765 the first day compared to 688 last year.

The middle schools, however, fell slightly as Berta Cabaza’s enrollment decreased to 832 from 864 while Miller Jordan experienced a smaller loss with 853 students reported the first day as opposed to the 855 enrolled last year. Riverside Middle School was the exception with 644 student enrollment numbers reported on the first day compared to 636 last year.

The district’s total enrollment on the first day of school increased from 10,196 in 2013 to 10,211 on Monday.
