A local teenager was arrested this week for allegedly trying to stab his grandfather with a kitchen knife.

At 6:55 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, officers with the San Benito Police Department responded to a domestic disturbance, where an 18-year-old male was accused of attempting to stab his 53-year-old grandfather with a knife.

The victim, a 53-year-old male from San Benito, told officers that his grandson, Jeremy Barrera of Rancho Viejo, had arrived “at his residence, apparently intoxicated.”

The victim further stated that Barrera allegedly confronted him about an ongoing family dispute while utilizing vulgar language. Officers reported that Barrera had “a kitchen knife in his hand” during the verbal altercation. The grandfather stated that Barrera allegedly attempted to stab him with the knife.

A police report indicates that, with the assistance of another family member, the knife was taken away from Barrera, who was restrained on the ground until the aforementioned neighbor arrived to assist.

Barrera was apprehended and placed under arrest for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and he was taken to city jail where he was arraigned by Municipal Court Judge Ben Yudesis who set bail at $20,000. After being taken into custody, Barrera reportedly admitted to drinking alcohol and taking pills, prior to confronting his grandfather.
