At a Monday meeting of the Area Business Owners Association (ABOA), the group made plans to approach local businesses and businesspeople to band together in an effort to make San Benito a ‘go-to city’ for health and wellness in the Rio Grande Valley.

Some ABOA members feel such a mission may also benefit the historic parts of downtown. The group’s founder, Lionel Betancourt, said, “We hope to be able to attract a variety of businesses that support our mission. As I see it, what we’re trying to do would lend itself to the revitalization of downtown. Businesses could quickly drop into (unoccupied) storefronts and become operational. We’re hoping some of the empty (downtown) buildings can be utilized for this purpose.”
