City of San Benito officials are seen Wednesday in the vicinity of an Otho Street alleyway near North Reagan Street where a man fell partially inside a manhole.

A San Benito man was transported to a local hospital Wednesday after he fell into a manhole while doing yard work behind his Reagan Street home.

Paramedics were called to an alleyway on Otho Street behind 57-year-old John Garcia Sr.’s residence, which is located on the 800 block of North Reagan in San Benito. It was there that Garcia Sr. and his son, 19-year-old John Garcia Jr., had been cleaning the alleyway behind the residence when the elder Garcia stepped on the manhole cover and partially fell in.

“What happened is while I was cutting the yard, I backed up and stepped on it; it wasn’t opened at all,” explained Garcia Sr.
