It’s decision time.

At a special meeting slated for 3 p.m. Friday, March 14, the San Benito CISD Board of Trustees is scheduled to discuss and take possible action on employing a new head football coach and athletic director. Up for the job are two remaining hopefuls for the post: El Paso Andress head coach Patrick Brown and former Lytle head coach Danny Gomez.

San Benito CISD Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ismael Cantu confirmed on Monday that PSJA Memorial head football coach Gus Cavazos has withdrawn his name from consideration for the position. According to Cantu, the two parties could not come to a contractual agreement.

    RE: Alley

You must be related to Undercover so I’ll ask you the same question:

    And who might that be?
    Yliana?
    June?
    Julian?
    Fatima?
    Oscar?
    Hector?
    Anna?
    Or all of them?

  1. @undercover 2
The board member with a criminal record! That will answer all your questions!

I agree that we the citizens of SB have not been represented correctly. I had the opportunity to chat with Mr. Papas Lopez as he was block walking. He seemed to be a very well educated man who believes in family values and the well being of our children. He is running a positive and clean campaign, I wish I could say that about all the candidates. I am certain he will do good. I also had the opportunity to meet Mr. Benavides and Mr. Salinas, both seem to have new ideas and are eager to serve our community. I can’t wait till May.

  2. How interesting they try to throw stones and try to discredit candidates, meanwhile, the last time i check we have a board member that hasn’t represented San Benito Board with respect, integrated and more importantly lack of responsibility the last few years. This town will never progress with foolish ignores.. We San Benito are the laughing stock of the valley with that type of representation. God bless you taxpayers, you get what you vote for..

  3. Rosalinda, once again you go on praising certain board members and knocking the rest. When are you gonna stop talking nonsense and realize that the past few horrible decisions by the board where voted by the magnificent 4 and horrible 3.. They finally agreed on something. But what do u get, Rosalinda knocking down the 4 and praising the 3. Its unfortunate that your actions are self centered and not in it for the kids. Keep wasting your time blogging nonsense we the people of San Benito are tired of you and who you support and trust me your actions and comments will differently work against your so called ” great educated candidates”. May is approaching fast so Rosalinda keep on talking out of line so your candidates can blame your nonsense support when they lose because you sure have turned off alot of votes! My VOTE JUNE, JULIAN, BOBBY AND ORLANDO PAPAS.. Its time!!!

Let’s see how many of the people complaining on this site are going to make a difference come election time. As quick as you all seem to be pointing the finger at all the wrongdoing, I think it’s time to just stop complaining (no one seems to be listening) and boot the current school board out. Go out and vote! That’s the ONLY WAY change is going to happen in San Benito. People are no longer laughing at San Benito. All the laughter has turned to pity. For shame, San Benito.

Ill complain all I want, and I do vote. I’ve seen some of the people running against these four people, and they don’t seem to be to great either. For example, I wouldn’t vote for someone who calls themselves papas, not that I have anything against him, but come on be more professional than that.

If Gomez is the only one left might as well give it to Saldana. Saldana couldn’t do any worse than Gomez. A little bit of cousin rivalry between him and Partida, but that is not all bad. I agree get the 10K back!

Just take the football program out. The district will save a lot of money, all that money being used for just the football program like buses cheerleaders, band, food, maintenance, CONSULTANTS, AND COACHES that just stay for 2-3 years, all that money can be used for the majority of the students instead of the minority. Lets face it Greyhounds havent won anything since ’05..lets be real this football program BLOWS! I thought all the kids were important not just some. These kids are doing just as bad in academics as they are on the field. What SBCISD should do is focus on academics because football is not gonna be there for them after high school. Now will this happen? I doubt it. As long as we elect people who just want to help themselves and family, San Benito will stay in the gutter. This is just my opinion.

Who’s ignorant move was that to put a current football coach to pick the next HC. This idea has gone to far. Then telling the new HC he can only hire 2 new coaches from the outside. That is a crock of S—! There is SB again, medling in matters that don’t concern them. The principal and the superintendent should stay of the hiring of the new HC assistants. Let him decide who he feels comfortable with to run a successful program. To many hands in the pie will always be a failure. SB will never win and HARLINGEN CARDINALS will always beat SB. As long as you have poloticaras in the middle of situations like this, SB will always FAIL.

I agree 100% with Steve, having a current coach on the interview committee is crazy. I don’t know much about Brown, only that he has never wavered about being San Benito’s head coach and all of a sudden he withdraws….what is going on?????

A little birdy tells me the first choice of our principal and our super pulled out 2 days ago. I won’t say the name (Cafe’) but I heard he wanted to make changes on the coaching staff but was only going to be allowed 2 coaches. What the hell, you have a guy that really wants to change the way we do things and we tell him “no”. We don’t really want to change. You can’t choose the guys that are really committed to Greyhound football? We have a lot if pride in our district, why do we have to accept just anyone? Why push away a guy that wants to be here and truly make changes? SO DISAPPOINTED! Who cares that he is not related to someone from our school board or not from the area???? We missed the boat San Benito!!!

I think the board went the consultant route with the best of intentions, but seeing how 3 (Cavazos, Gonzalez and Gomez) of the 5 finalists really had no bidness being in a top 10 much less a final 5, you can’t help but walk away feeling the consultant approach was a waste of money.

If the consultant came to the conclusion independently that these were the best 5 to pick from, then shame on them. If they came to the conclusion that these were the best 5 to pick from with influence from school officials (read: current coaches on staff), then still shame on them!

I believe some commenter posted Cavazos’s losing record in his 6 seasons at PSJA Memorial. This was somehow left out every time Cavazos’s record was disclosed in articles covering this topic. A more glaring omission is the fact that this coach is coming off a 2-8 outing this past season. 2 wins. 8 losses. Yet, there Cavazos was…a finalist to replace a coach that this board parted ways with for going 3-7. Let me repeat…a 2-8 coach was in a position to discuss and negotiate salary for an AD/HC position that was vacated by a 3-7 coach. This guy should never have been in a position to withdraw because he didn’t deserve to be a finalist to begin with.

I won’t waste any time dissecting the resume of Gonzalez. I’ll just offer that his last tenure with this school district was sooo bad that if memory serves me correctly, in addition to removing our previous HC Carlous Stone two games into that infamous 2002 season, board action was also taken to remove Gonzalez as well.

The previous commenter already chimed in about Gomez and his “shenanigans” at Lytle…but shenanigans aside, his resume frankly doesn’t stack up with several other applicants on the list that didn’t make the cut.

If one has to choose between Brown and Gomez, it would seem that Brown should be chosen almost by default and if Brown weren’t in the equation (say he withdraws next), the board should just abandon this whole consultant/committee approach. They should also ask Champions for their money back.

I would also add that it makes no sense to have a current coach on staff (interim AD) participate in the interview and recommendation process as part of a committee tasked with recommending who his future boss should be. That kind of influence presents an obvious conflict of interest and if the talk among those in the know is true, then this application selection process has been tainted almost from the get go which might explain why an early front runner like Stump decided to bow out.

…. These guys pack up and say adios! Hmmm
The tale of two coaches ….. It was the best of times and the worst of times for these two guys.

Two years ago both land their first hc job ever one moved away from home and one moved back home to take their jobs. Fast forward two years after both were successful implementing their programs which I will give credit to. Now both want to pack up and leave their first ever jobs from districts that went out on a limb for these guys and then for them to just want to up and leave. Oh wait one already did that damn! Talk about LOYALTY. You come in sell your program Have the kids buy into it they bust their butts for you and succeed and them BOOM bye guys sorry but thanks for the paycheck and job im outta here. In a profession where LOYALTY is a key virtue these guys got a taste of success and believe they can just produce the same at a higher level of competition. One moving from a 3a and the other from 4a. Hmmm lots at stake here for these guys oh wait working at a 6a level is just another notch on their resume cuz either one of them will pack it up in two years for two different reasons . One to move back north at a more prestigious 6a school closer to home now that he would have 2 yrs experience at a 6a and the other gone after two years cuz of some type shannanigans that ran him out of lytle as a head coach and as an asst coach back in the day. So to sum it all up two years down the road we will be right back here looking for another head coach if either one of these two guys are chosen.
