San Benito wrestlers victorious over East

The San Benito Greyhounds and Lady Greyhounds varsity wrestling team took on Weslaco East Thursday, Jan. 9.

The San Benito High School varsity boys and girls wrestling teams dominated on Jan. 9, when they took on the Weslaco East Wildcats. Opening matches began with the female wrestlers.

The first match of the night started in the 102 pound weight division with Esmeralda Rodriguez from San Benito taking on Desirae Cazares from Weslaco East. The match began as Esmeralda took a shot to take down Cazares and pinned her in the first period. Following the 102 pound weight division was the 119 pound weight division, with Yolanda Cavazos (SBHS) and Daisy Galvan (WEHS). In the first period, Cavazos pinned Galvan. There was also a 128 and 138 pound weight division. The Lady Hounds finished with a total of 36 points.

The Greyhounds then prepared to take on the Weslaco East Wildcats. The first match began with Jose Camacho from San Benito and Jesse De los Santos from Weslaco East. Camacho won the third period with 13 points. Following, Christopher Gallegos (SBHS) and Joshua Rivera (WEHS) battled in the 120 pound weight division. Gallegos took down Rivera in the second period with 24 seconds left. After Gallegos’ match, Amancio Vazquez (SBHS) won his match against Manuel Garcia (WEHS). Vazquez pinned Garcia during the second period with 15 seconds left in the period. Afterwards, the 132 pound weight division proceeded where Joshua Gallegos from San Benito beat Pedro Garcia from Weslaco East. For the exhibition match, Enrique Guzman (SBHS) wrestled against Alan Vallejo (WEHS).

On his team, Greyhound wrestling coach Rudy Quilantan, who has spearheaded the program since 1992, said, “They give it their all. They never give up no matter what.”

    Congrats and shout out to the wrestling team AND powerlifting team. Get it done! Hard work pays off. Keep grinding.

    Good to see positive and production in the midst of all the negative with the SBCISD.
