Spencer Gantt, the San Benito Greyhounds head football coach and athletic director, is seen in this file photo of the Nov. 8, 2013 matchup against the Weslaco Panthers at Bobby Lackey Stadium.

It appears as though the Spencer Gantt era in San Benito may be coming to an end.

According to an agenda posted Friday for the regular meeting of the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees, a “discussion and possible action on approval of athletic director resignation agreement” will take place during executive session on Tuesday night.

Attempts to reach Gantt for comment on Friday evening were unsuccessful.

SBCISD Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ismael Cantu confirmed that a separation agreement between Gantt and the district is currently on the table; however, he did not divulge any details regarding the agreement.

“Since this is a personnel matter, any other details regarding the separation agreement between the coach and the district will be disclosed after the meeting,” Cantu said. “Right now, I’m not in a position to really comment on it, because that’s an item that is going to be discussed in executive session, and until we step out of executive session we won’t know the specifics. But we should get a much clearer picture afterwards, and all documents will be a matter of public record at that time.”

Board President Yliana González said that trustees are expected to be presented with some of those details by attorney Tony Torres of Flores and Torres LLP, the Edinburg law firm that represents the district.

“We don’t know exactly what the outcome was but that was something that we discussed at the previous executive meeting: whether we could contemplate the thought of possibly reaching a separation agreement,” González said. “I’m not sure if it (separation agreement) was reached mutually because we haven’t spoken to Tony with regards to that, but he’s going to present everything to us in executive session on Tuesday.”

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, at San Benito Veterans Memorial Academy.

In five seasons as the head football coach and athletic director of the Greyhounds, Gantt’s squads went 28-26 with three playoff appearances (2009, ’10, ’11). Included in that was a District 32-5A co-championship and bi-district championship season in 2011 as the ’Hounds went 9-3.

San Benito missed the postseason the past two years in District 31-5A, one of the most competitive leagues in South Texas. The ’Hounds went 6-4 and just missed out in 2012 before limping to a 3-7 finish this past season.

Speculation on Gantt’s future was a hot item of discussion throughout most of the past football season as the ’Hounds struggled finding victories. Though competitive in nearly every ballgame, San Benito could not string together the wins necessary for a playoff return.

Gantt, who makes more than $93,000 annually as the San Benito High School AD, was brought on board in 2009 when he replaced Mario Peña after a wildly successful stint as Harlingen High’s offensive coordinator in 2008. That year, the Cardinals went 10-3 with a third round playoff appearance, thanks in part to Gantt’s high-octane offense which solidified his status as a hot coaching prospect. Prior to that, Gantt coached wide receivers under Scott Ford at Los Fresnos during its successful string of third round playoff appearances from 2006-07.

    Life for Halftime?
Last I checked, bleachers stay packed during the game and not during halftime. Last I checked, halftime was #1, #2, food, and chit chat. One person goes down to get food, the rest stay seated not to watch band but to not have to wait in line and settle for watching band because that’s what they are left with. Never heard a crowd cheer for a band they way they cheer for a football team. If it wasn’t for football and football stadiums, band wouldn’t have anything. If it wasn’t for football you wouldn’t have a time period to play. I’m not bashing band and playing band or any other sport or uil event. I’m just stating the facts, which you didn’t manage to address. The judging for Pigskin is a joke. It doesn’t mean the band is good or bad, deserving or not deserving, it just means the judging is a joke.

    http://m.valleymorningstar.com/news/local_news/article_9cad3c32-39e2-11e3-878d-0019bb30f31a.html?mode=jqm

I’ve seen numerous of these bands play at halftime and I have seen them play at pigskin. The 1 ratings given out are a joke. If it rains, some bands don’t even play at halftime. At halftime, some bands only play the fight song. At halftime, some bands cater to homecoming. Last I checked, win or lose, a football team plays every game, don’t have the option to loaf it, don’t treat games as practice. Band? Live for halftime? You’re awesome little drummer boy. Flat out awesome!!!

This is blown out of proportion. I apologize to band people if they are offended. I was just stating facts and opinions and never put down an actual band or band member. No need to get butt hurt over all this. Be careful with the drumsticks next time. How about we save this chit chat for a band article. Just don’t hold your breath.

Clear example of people who are fixated on bashing politicians! The article and comments are about coach Gantt’s inability to turnaround our football program and you get comment on ” tamales” seriously. Look!! Its very simple lady/ blogger if your so bettor about a certain board member( in this case) than run for the board!
If you are who you say you are you might have a great chance!! Not!! Your worse than chuy….

Hey JF., When was the last time you attended Pigskin? Pigskin judging is NOT a joke. Tell you what, you stick to talking about the precious football program at SBCISD and leave band to the rest of the community who are very proud of the band’s accomplishments. WE LIVE FOR HALFTIME!

    RE: Jay

    “band?”
Yes I mentioned band. Football players are football players. Band members are band members. Cheerleaders are cheerleaders. Calculator club is calculator club. Its as simple as that. Do what you joined or join something else. Don’t take what I say out of context. But since you did, how about we give 1st place to more than one football team per district. Now that would be awesome.

“Come on….” Band and band voters, judges, experts, nose pickers, whatever you want to call them hand out 1’s (one ratings) during Pigskin competition like Sam’s Club passes out sample food on Sunday’s. I’ll just leave it at that.

“Don’t have to pay taxes to be a board member”
To be a board member, you have to be a citizen of San Benito for 6 months according to the following information:

    https://www.sbnewspaper.com/2014/01/07/candidates-to-begin-filing-in-city-school-elections-on-jan-29/comment-page-1/#comment-1514312

It falls down to one of two things –
    1) If you live in San Benito, you pays taxes to the city of San Benito.
    2) If you don’t live in San Benito, you don’t pay taxes to the city of San Benito.

It’s been questioned whether some board members live in San Benito. If they did, perhaps, just perhaps, they would be more mindful with spending money. If they don’t, then they shouldn’t be on the Board.

    Simple enough for you Jay?

      JF,

What about the football players and cheerleaders that are also in band?

As far as, “Band and band voters, judges, experts, nose pickers, whatever you want to call them hand out 1′s (one ratings) during Pigskin competition like Sam’s Club passes out sample food on Sunday’s.”
The band doesn’t compete the same way the football team competes. The band performs at pigskin and is judged individually, not against any other band. IF the judges feel the band has earned a 1 rating, then that’s what they receive. It is possible for all the bands at pigskin to receive a 1 rating.

It seems as if you have the out dated mentality that football players are in someway better than the rest of the student body. With so much money being invested into the football program, shouldn’t there be better results with the team? How many professional football players has San Benito High-school had? How many San Benito High-school football players receive full scholarships to go play in college? SBHS has graduated many professionals (most of them were not football players) that include teachers, scientists, business men and women, engineers, lawyers and doctors. Why don’t we reinvest some of the money spent on the football program into academics and graduate more teachers, scientists, business men and women, engineers, lawyers and doctors.

Technically, you don’t have to live in San Benito to be a board member. You just have to live within the San Benito school district, which isn’t only within the San Benito city limits. You also don’t have to pay any city or school property taxes to be a board member. If you live within the school district but don’t own the property or house; then you wouldn’t pay taxes, only the owner would. So, renters who live within the school district do not pay property taxes, but they can still be a board member.

        RE: Dave Chappelle

Thank you for the clarity on the board member situation. Explains why we have the board members we do and why they spend the money they do. Again, thank you.

I love what you put about the band not competing the same way football competes. Its the exact point I was trying to make. They don’t compete the same way. They aren’t the same. If players and parents can’t hack football, get out. If members or parents can’t hack band, get out.

You are right to question money and results in regard to the football program. I think many do, including myself. But hey, isn’t that the reason why they got rid of Gantt?

As far graduating teachers, lawyers, etc etc. San Benito didn’t graduate any professionals last I checked. Maybe a brain or an entrepreneur or a kid that inherited a family business or income which led them to immediate success. MAYBE. But professional? Colleges do that Dave. Or at least time, I checked. The only exception might be high school kids that attend concurrent enrollment college classes while in high school, but there you go, that’s college classes, not high school classes.

Invest or reinvest? Ask our Superintendent that. Wait, our interim. Check that, our new interim. Or the Board? I think they control more power than the Super position does now. But they probably won’t since they’ve already spent so much of the taxpayers’ money, on very questionable things I must say. But if you are questioning where and how the district spends and invests money, I definitely agree with you.

Football players and cheerleaders in band? Last I checked, they play football then go play in band. Last I checked, they cheer then go play in the band. I don’t recall a band member playing band, then going to play football. I don’t recall a band member playing band, then going to cheer.

Band is cool and all. They have very loyal supporters. The school district doesn’t pay for students to go on field trips like Fiesta or Schlitterbahn or any thing like that. At least I haven’t seen that. I know it doesn’t happen at the middle school level. Band, however, does have field trips of that nature because of the support and fund raising they do. That’s cool. Props to them. Maybe instead of going on trips, they can donate all that money to school.

90s and early 00’s football built excitement and enthusiasm in the community. Ultimately, through this process, money was accumulated (taxpayer money, grants, etc etc) to build the Greyhound Sports Complex and Bobby Morrow. Last I checked, it wasn’t because of the band.

It’s good to ask why though. It’s good to ask why not too. It’s good to ask what are you gonna do about it too. A local priest in San Benito is known to do that when the church’s parishioners go to him with complaints. Smart, witty, sneaky guy that guy. You see. You see.

        I’ll close with this.

As far as the judging for Pigskin goes. “IF the judges feel the band has earned a 1 rating, then that’s what they receive. It is possible for all the bands at pigskin to receive a 1 rating.” It doesn’t take much common sense to figure this one out Dave. You can’t possibly tell me that the same 1 you give the Harlingen High School Band is the same 1 the Lyford Band deserves? Really? Have you seen the Lyford band? Have you seen the Harlingen High School Band or any actual BAMF band? Now you said its not a competition. It’s based on how that band performs. This isn’t a trick question Dave. This isn’t the 1 ton of bricks and 1 ton of feathers question. Pigskin judging is a joke. FEEL. Seems like they feel like a nut more times than they dont. Common sense Dave. Common sense.

You should have come at me with some Kevin Hart stuff Dave. You’re washed up.

    RE: Luis

Would you like some cheese with that?

The San Benito Greyhounds didn’t have big studs on the team from 1990 thru 2000. But we opened the can. We killed em all. And then let the paramedics sort em out. We didn’t have big studs. We won because the coaches were BAMF. Roberts, Gonzalez, Garcia, Coplea. Freshman football went undefeated for several years during that time until Stone got there. JV team won district. Varsity won district. We competed more then with Harlingen than ever. When steroids and recruiting from up North was Harlingen’s thing. When we traveled in the cold to play big black BAMF from San Antonio before anybody thought about doing it. When we played big black BAMF from MMA that were 20 years old. Coaches visited the middle school football players. Instilled toughness. Instilled discipline. Parents were tough. None of this get out of practice at 5pm stuff so you can the after school program bus home. Times were tough back then just like they are now. Parents drove to pick up players. Parents cared. Parents were around. Parents were involved. And coaches cussed at us. Big deal. Grow a pair. Toughen up. Try harder. Get better. We won on discipline, skill, hard work, speed. Never size. We went through boot camp. Busted butt! Sweat! Blood! Tears. Wore shirts we believed in. Pride makes a difference. We’re only as strong as our weakest link. And if you couldn’t hack it, join the band!

    Don’t get it twisted son.

It’s been said. If a kid isn’t trained to sit on the toilet, he’ll just keep pooping on himself. Same difference.

Oh and Jim Helms – reminds me of the fisherman guy from the State Farm commercial. Oh you almost had it. You gotta be a little quicker than that. Give me a break. That guy is done. 10-15 years ago, sure. Right now – done!

HERE WE GO AGAIN!!!!! GO GET A COACH FROM UP STATE! ITS NOT THE COACH ITS THE PLAYERS THAT MAKE THAT COACH LETS COMPARE APPLES WITH APPLES. THEY HAVE KIDS THAT ARE 6’5 300 POUNDS AND NOT JUST ONE SEVERAL. WE HAVE ONE AND WE ARE ALL EXCITED ABOUT HIM.. BREWER AT MCALLEN WON THE DISTRICT BUT WHAT GOOD DID THAT DO HE GOT BEAT BY A SMALLER AND WEAKER TEAM. PROVING MY POINT THAT A COACH FROM UPSTATE CANNOT MAKE MIRACLES HAPPEN. AS FOR SANTA MARIA IF HE WAS SUCH A GOOD COACH WHY DID HE LEAVE A BIGGER SCHOOL AND BETTER PAYING SCHOOL TO COME TO SANTA MARIA. IT JUST DOES NOT MAKE SENSE!!!!! INSTEAD OF PUTTING DOWN OUR VALLEY COACHES STAND BEHIND THEM AND SUPPORT THEM. THAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH THE VALLEY THEY THINK THAT OUR SAVIORS OUR COACHES FROM UP STATE THEY ARE NOT!!!!! JUST LOOK AT PAST YEARS AN OUT OF VALLEY COACHES ONE OF OUR VALLEY TEAMS STAYS AWHILE THEN LEAVES BACK UP STATE. SOME EVEN COME BACK AND THEN LEAVE AGAIN. PEOPLE THEY ARE BUILDING THERE RETIREMENT SALARY TO THE LAST 3 HIGHEST PAID YEARS. YES THE VALLEY PAYS BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE AND THAT IS THE REASON UP STATE COACHES COME DOWN NOT TO HELP OUR VALLEY KIDS BE SUCCESSFUL.

I agree with you Lionel Garza. But just to be clear, I let me say that my point was to not just put blame on some of the board, which is what Nick appeared to be doing – I may be wrong, but my point was to put blame on the entire board. The 3 putting up with the 4’s actions is a clear giveaway to what is going on. You can’t bring out somebody else’s skeletons when you have your own. You can’t point the finger when you have 3 pointing back at you. Many wonder why the 4 got away with serious yet comical controversies – insurance, emails, family pay raises, where they live, wasting tax payer money, etc etc. Many figure the 3 would stand up to the 4. Well it appears the board loves to play “if you snitch I’ll snitch”. Thus the reason why nothing was ever done in regards to wrongdoings and standing up for what is right even if it’s at their own expense. It’s called ethics. It’s called morals. It’s called doing what’s right. Something Yliana, Julian, Fatima, June, Ana, Oscar, and Hector clearly don’t portray having when it comes to being board members and doing what is best for the SBCISD.

  2. Its very obviuos JF you dont pay attention to detail but it was a Unanimous vote. I find is coaching situation a bit ridiculous, when just a few months ago the superior- so called level headed 3( Ana, Medrano, Leal) wanted to extend Gantt’s contract and now they vote with the magnificent 4.. That should tell you folks who’s in it for the kids and not playing politics to get re-elected.. Medrano said it best ” its reelection time”.. That was his reasoning for wanting to extend Gantt’s contract but its extremely obvious it back fired on him and the other 2.. Seriously folks were not that gullible and we are insulted that u think we haven’t caught on to your idiotic ways.. After May 2014 we wont have to worry about this nonsense anymore!!!

Well those old board members did bring in Gantt for 90Gs if I’m not mistaken. The new FABULOUS 4 raised his salary to 93Gs. Taxpayers money. Do the FABULOUS 4 pay taxes in San Benito? Refer to TWO QUESTIONS comments on the CANDIDATES post. Buzz is the FABULOUS 4 want to split the AD and HC jobs. I guarantee that’ll end up being way over the 90Gs Gantt got. Tax payers money. Not to mention the money Limon is still getting paid because the FABULOUS 4 still have him there. Plus 2 other interim supers they brought in. Tax payers money..If you wish to talk about tax payer money, please don’t exclude those FABULOUS 4 from the conversation.

This is just a joke! This coach has no business coaching in our town and wasting our children’s time with the experience he possesses – he was an athletic trainer for crying out loud! The board members and committee that selected him should have been more knowledgeable and obviously more selective. This whole situation is just comical in every sense and is a total mockery of our school district and our taxpayer’s money. RE: Luis

I agree about Gantt and his staff dragging down the program. The cussing and yelling I question. I think cussing and yelling happens every where. It doesn’t justify it but I mean, it is football. I don’t condone it but it happens. I don’t condone degrading a player but cussing, in general, happens. You gotta be mentally tough. Physically tough. Players cuss on the field and it goes unnoticed. Players play dirty on the field and it goes unnoticed. Heck, they both go noticed. Is the player suppose to stop what he is doing and go cry to mommy and daddy. Get tough. Suck it up. Many parents nowadays are soft and complain for every little thing. Soft parent. Soft kid. Simple as that. Now cussing and yelling is mostly due to lack of preparation and frustration. Something that the Gantt program excelled at. It’s a little give and take. It’s a little of both worlds. Football is football. Soccer is soccer. Cheerleading is cheerleading. Choir is choir. Band is band. If you can’t play the drums, you don’t play the drums. If you can’t play football, you don’t play football. It’s like a cheerleader sitting in the crowd with her family instead being on the sideline doing flips and cheers. HELLO! Let’s give the star QB some thread and needles – knit a blanket on the sidelines. HELLO! I will say this. An athlete can’t be expected to do what he hasn’t been coached and skilled and practiced up to do. You gotta build the program from the start. 7th grade. 8th grade. Set the standard high. Set the bar high. Set the expectations high. Visit your athletes. Get to know them. Show them you care. Skill them. Educate them. Practice them up. Weed out the suckers. Build the future. Like I said before, this is something Gantt and all associated with the football program have failed to do. Clean house. SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST.

We’ll find out tonight and in the weeks to come how political our board and hiring committee will be. Whether they have their interests in mind or whats best for the student athletes and future of the San Benito CISD athletic program.

Let’s call a spade a spade. The hiring of Coach Gantt was a huge mistake. In reference to Richard, giving credit to the board and a committee instead of to Limon is funny. In this case it’s not a good thing. The board and committee was a joke. Gantt at best was/is a good coordinator. But I question that. At the high school level., you work with what you have. You can’t instill a run run run offense if you don’t have a qb or rb that can actually run or if you don’t have a line that can run block well. You can’t go pass crazy either without a qb that can throw or a wr that can catch and produce. Gantt tried to run something that flat out didn’t work. It could have worked if he would have taken more pride in his work. Build a program from the ground up. From 7th and 8th grade up. The middle school football program is a joke. Not the kids, the program. Love or hate it, the San Benito football program use to be built on solid fundamentals – pride, hard work, discipline, toughness, whatever it takes, extra time, effort, blood, sweat, team mentality. It no longer is. Stone crumbled the program and his early success was attributed to the program he inherited from Roberts. Pena tried to rebuild what Stone ruined but gave up, quit, and left. Everything since has been hello kitty panty material.

Hoping for a better board. Hoping for a better committee. Hoping for a better future.

    Food for thought:

The great team of 61….days and athletics long gone. Now we buy out Coach Gantt. It is only money. June Aguilera once was quoted in your paper as saying the only good decision Limon ever made was hiring Coach Gantt. Limon doesn’t deserve that credit. Gantt was hired by the board of trustees following the recommendation of a committee of citizens. I wish Coach Gantt well, this community full of Saturday morning head coaches just didn’t give him the backing he needed. His local coaches were always running to board members to undermine him. Well at least Chuy Aguilera got his share of business under the Gantt era.

Now as far as a tri city bomber wanting to leave his school cuz his school is now the fourth smallest in their class thanks but no thanks… Our kids deserve someone that has their best interest at heart making them into pillars of their future communities by instilling discipline, hard work, and doing right in life which all carry over from the field to the real world … And there are plenty of kids roaming the halls thirsting for new change and energy from coaches who have gone to the same schools they have !!!!

Opening the AD position would certainly entertain ex SB HC Mario Pena financially, $120K!
or a Tri-City Bomber Coach! Which direction will the school board take and how many more secret meetings will they have until they hire a new HC? Crickets!

Sitting on hiring a head coach only leads to a new HC scrambling to form a successful coaching staff. How about taking the SB Greyhounds back to the Promise Land? @Hounder50, exactly! New coaches across the board. Huevos Rancheros, God willing SB will hire a new AD/HC (sooner vs. later) who will motivate and lead a coaching staff that will work cohesively with the athletes to produce on and off the field.

Have been working out of town and was catching up on the SBCISD Board Meetings online…. can someone please tell those two ladies on the board that they are not school administrators… sure sounded like micromanaging to me… questioning Mrs. McCall, a certified CPA, and then in December questioning Dr. Greer on the Plans is beyond comprehension…. May 2014 is going to be a breath of fresh air!
Coach Gantt… hold your head high sir.. you will land in a district where people are valued and appreciated….This board behaves as if they are in Junior High.

      dear coach gantt

whatever new job you land, make sure your heart is in it because i question whether it ever was in san benito. build a program. kids dont need to play football. they get to play football. be tough. instill discipline. raise your expectations and standards. remember that a football program starts at the junior high level. you need to supervise your junior high coaches and kids. something you clearly never did. teachers asked to coach because coaches dont coach is inexcusable. coaches from other schools asked to coach at other schools is inexcusable. if you did your job, leap frogging from here to there and there to here wouldnt have to happen. if by any chance you do not get a coaching job, look into becoming a car salesman. you sure do know how to sale a lemon.

      sincerely yours,
the jobs youve been looking for up north

Well you can only blame coaches so much if we didn’t have a bunch of spoiled bratts here in San Benito with parents that want to blame everyone but themselves our kids might not be afraid to work hard, not just on the field or court but in the classroom as well, just saying 🙂

Huevo’s Rancheros you hit the nail on the head. Didn’t know Gantt was looking for another job but then again he did it last year and then denied it and then it came out through other newspaper. Sad but true some board members even after hearing this refuse to believe it and were still willing to renew his contract if given a chance. Both sides of the board need an overhaul! Run em’ all out!

I hope they clean house but I don’t like the rumors I’m hearing about Gantt’s replacement. We need to clean house and start from scratch with a new and experienced coaching staff and not the same mediocre coaches we have had here. Just like Coach O’Brian did with the Houston Texans this week. Weed out the bad apples and get the San Benito Football program back to the Promise Land.

This isn’t headline news. Anybody with half a brain, eyes, and ears, knows that Gantt isn’t coming back. As I posted earlier, he has been out of town doing interviews. With a few games left in the season, word is he asked to leave so he had more time to look for better job up north. Former SB HC Mario Pena name has been floating around and has been spotted several times meeting with the local who’s who of SB. Shame on the district officials and board members who let this linger on. God willing SB will have sufficient time and effort to find a new capable AD/HC and clean house starting with the Evans crew. They too have had sufficient time to help build this program and haven’t. Rebuild. Old farts. New farts. They’ve both had time to produce and haven’t. A fart is a fart no matter how loud, quiet, or juicy it may be.

Who in the world wrote that self-serving advertisement page for the board of trustees… work collaboratively…. who are they kidding… all they have done is spent our kids money and not improve one thing at sbcisd….
Hope Coach Gantt has a good attorney… pretty sure neither of the two interim superintendents did an evaluation of his performance…. where is mr. limon? oh right, sitting home at $163,000 plus…. and these people want to get
    re-elected…. welcoming May 2014

I guess this is what happens when the team had a, shall we say, unsuccessful season?
