Dr. Ismael Cantu cited fairness on Wednesday when asked why he opted to take substantially less money than his predecessors as the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District interim superintendent.
“This is an interim position, and because it’s an interim position it’s not longterm,” Cantu said. “I just didn’t feel that the salary should equate to the daily rate of an existing superintendent. I just didn’t think it was right.”
Cantu said he considered the $450 daily rate the Texas Education Agency pays its consultants, a capacity in which he continues to serve at four other Rio Grande Valley school districts, and settled on $500 per day as the SBCISD interim superintendent. Alfonso Obregón, Cantu’s predecessor, made $717.25 per day for a total of $91,092.38 during a tenure that spanned from his appointment on May 23 until the expiration of his contract on Nov. 27.
